Dandenong South's boundaries were significantly altered prior to the 2011 Census, with the northern boundary running along Cheltenham Road, the railway line, and the Princes Highway, and the southern boundary running down the South Gippsland Freeway to Abbotts Road and Bangholme Road in the south and alongside the Eastlink Toll road.

It used to be a sizable industrial suburb with approximately 5000 residents, including Lyndhurst.
