The cemetery started operating in 1901 and was once named as The Necropolis Springvale.
The Springvale Botanical Cemetery was renamed in 2006 to better represent its growing botanical significance, which includes the initial plantings of two bunya-bunya trees, palms, and gums.
Coffins, passengers, and personnel could all be transported to the cemetery through its own railway branch line and station, which was in operation from 1904 to 1952. In April 1905 at Springvale, the first cremation occurred.
