History of Dandenong Hospital

In 1939, as World War II began and Dandenong experienced numerous fires and other calamities. As a result, committee made a decision that was supported by the neighbourhood doctors, that a hospital was to be built on five acres they were to purchase in Cleeland Street.

Many people thought the site was perfect and the land, which was a part of the Ross estate, cost £300. In order to provide a haven for those in need of healing, the Dandenong and District Hospital was established.

Dandenong Hospital was established in 1942 and joined the Southern Health Care Network, which was the predecessor of Monash Health, in 1995.
