About Hampton East

Hampton East, one of the suburbs in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia is situated within the City of Bayside local government area. It is about 14 km south-east of Melbourne`s Central Business District.

Hampton East recorded a population of 5,069 at the 2021 census.

History of Hampton East

Hampton East was associated with the popular bayside Pic-Nic Point in the early 1880s, reached from the railway terminus at Brighton.

In 1913, a primary school was opened in Hampton. It was followed by a Catholic primary school in 1924. The 1930s saw marked growth in Hampton East as market gardens were subdivided.

The strip of shops along the thoroughfare of Hampton Street is one of Hampton`s major attractions.

Hampton East includes a selection of retail outlets fronting the highway, across the road from the commercial centre of Moorabbin. The G.L. Basterfield Park, accessed via Dane Street, consists of an ornamental lake surrounded by grassy slopes, gardens, flowers and trees.

The B.J. Ferdinando Gardens, located at the top of the coastal cliffs opposite Small Street, include a BBQ shelter, picnic facilities and extensive lawns are a popular venue for wedding photos due to its scenic backdrop.
