About Mentone

Mentone is a residential seaside suburb on Port Phillip Bay of Melbourne, Victoria Australia.

Mentone is approximately 22 kilometers south-east of Melbourne's central business district, and has a population of 13,197 according to the 2021 census.

History of Mentone

Prior to the development of the township, the area was known as Balcombe. It is named after the owner of the land between Balcombe Road and the Bay, west of Warrigal Road, where central Mentone is currently located.

The growing land market in the 1880s brought developers J.H. Knipe and Sir Matthew Davies to the area, with Davies being primarily responsible for the layout of the Mentone Township Estate.

Aside with the beach, Mentone is home to a large number of parks and playgrounds. Here, being outside is a way of life, and Mentone is particularly worth a visit because of its vibrant main strip, which is home to many eateries, cafés, bakeries, boutiques, and grocery stores.

Mentone Beach's calm surf and the bay's graceful arc make this beachfront strip a desirable place to swim, but it's also a beautiful place for leisurely walks.

The Mentone Racecourse Reserve has a good-sized playground, a lot of lawns for running, some bush to explore, ponds with many of ducks living in them, and covered BBQs and picnic tables.

Included in this are Mentone Girls' Secondary College, Mentone Park Primary School, Kilbreda College, St. Bede's College, Mentone Grammar School, Mentone Girls' Grammar School, Mentone Primary School, St. Patrick's Catholic Primary School, and Mentone Primary School.

The heart of the vibrant suburb is the Mentone Beach Lifesaving Club and its year-round swim activities. Numerous sports leagues, including ones for tennis, cricket, football, hockey, and even lawn bowling, are also based in the suburb.
