About Mentone

Mentone is approximately 22 kilometers south-east of Melbourne`s central business district, and has a population of 13,197 according to the 2021 census.

History of Mentone

Prior to the development of the township, the area was known as Balcombe. It is named after the owner of the land between Balcombe Road and the Bay, west of Warrigal Road, where central Mentone is currently located.

The growing land market in the 1880s brought developers J.H. Knipe and Sir Matthew Davies to the area, with Davies being primarily responsible for the layout of the Mentone Township Estate.
