About Oakleigh

Oakleigh is a residential suburb with significant secondary industry located 15 kilometers south-east of Melbourne, just beyond Caulfield and Malvern.

Oakleigh is part of the Monash City local government area. The population was 8,442 according to the 2021 census.

History of Oakleigh

The suburb was formerly known as Scotchmans Creek until 1853, at which point it was given the name Oakleigh.

The name may have originated from a she-oak tree that grew close to Scotchmans Creek, from Oakleigh Park, close to Malvern Hills in Hertfordshire, England, or from an early settler named Mrs. Oakley.

Oakleigh, formerly a large independent city, was incorporated into Melbourne as part of the city`s eastward expansion in the 1950s. It originally had a distinct municipality in the former City of Oakleigh, a large historic Central Business District, and own suburbs.
