About Wheelers Hill

Wheelers Hill is a residential suburb in Melbourne that is situated between Glen Waverley and Scoresby, about 22 kilometers to the city`s southeast.

It includes one of the highest points in metropolitan Melbourne at 152 meters above sea level.

History of Wheelers Hill

Wheelers Hill was named after James Wheeler, a pioneer in the Dandenong area.

The Dandenong Creek, the current boundary of Scoresby, and a farm east of Ferntree Gully Road were its original location.

A hotel was built at Wheelers Hill, where Ferntree Gully Road intersected Jells Road. Ferntree Gully Road provided access to the Dandenong Ranges. It also housed the Mulgrave post office. In 1888, the post office was renamed Wheelers Hill to avoid confusion with the village of Mulgrave to the south-east.

Tourist Attractions in Wheelers Hill

Jells Park, a sizable recreational complex covering more than 127 hectares, is located in Wheelers Hill. It comprises 9 km of cycle lanes and walking tracks which surround a huge lake.

There’s also the suburb’s cultural center located in a well kept reserve on the intersection of Ferntree Gully and Jells roads. These include the Wheelers Hill Library, which is the ideal place to sit and read while overlooking the parkland and lake, and the Monash Gallery of Art, which offers a rotating display of photographic exhibitions throughout the year and is always worth a visit.
